Cinque terre and Christmas

Today is The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, called in Italy ‘Immacolata’. That feast is a day off when schools and business are closed and many Italians go to church to honor Mary but also a special day when all of Italians officially begin to decorate their homes, Christmas trees and all of the cities with a huge amount of Christmas lights. They also put up the Nativity scene in their homes or in front of the houses, in the streets and they especially love to do it. It was in Italy that the first in the world Nativity scene was established.

If you want a trip to Italy, take a look at Manarola, where on the slopes of one of the Cinque Terre hills an unusual installation is being created - the largest illuminated Nativity scene in the world.

If anyone ever tells you that there is nothing to do in Italy in winter, this story will surely surprise him.

So what we are talking about.. 7 kilometres of electric cables, 15,000 lights, 300 life-size figures and all of this - solar power plant powering the installation – it was enough to break the record. Manarola in the Christmas scenery  you can see from today until the end of January.

And who is behind all this? The former railwayman, Mario Andreoli, it's him who has been decorating the Manarola slope in the Cinque Terre National Park in such an unusual way for over 30 years and does not think to quit. Every year on this day, the inauguration of the nativity scene takes place in which most of the city's residents participate and in which there is no shortage of fireworks.
